One million trees will help restore a critical peat-swamp forest in Borneo, home to the world’s largest protected population of orangutans. We aim to grow, plant, monitor and protect over a million trees, sequestering carbon to lead the fight against climate change and protecting a vast biodiversity-rich rainforest.
Let’s face it, tree planting is trendy. Everyone’s doing it, so what sets us apart?
Our tree planting programme is evidence-based and community-led. The process doesn’t begin and end with sticking a few trees in the ground; effective, long-term habitat restoration takes so much more.
We plant a range of native tree species, carefully selected for their ecological importance and high rates of survival. We purchase the seedlings in bulk from specially-constructed community nurseries, generating a sustainable source of income for local families.
Once the trees have been planted, we continue to monitor their growth and survival over the next ten years. Should survival rates fall below target, we will review our methods and replant accordingly to ensure the long-term viability of our forest restoration efforts.
Finally, we support a network of community firefighting teams to protect the forest (including our planting areas) and defend against dry season fires.
